Website maintenance cost: what ongoing care actually includes

Laptop on a sunny desk beside a small plant, ready for routine website care

Your website isn't a "set and forget" job. It needs regular attention to stay safe, fast and reliable. Most business owners know that. What they don't know is what that attention should include, or what it should cost.

Ballpark figure: Website maintenance in Australia usually costs $90–$380 a month for a small business site. A basic brochure site sits at the lower end. A site that takes bookings or payments can cost $380–$980 or more. That works out to roughly $1,200–$3,000+ a year for most small businesses.

If you've got a website (or one on the way) and you're wondering which ongoing care is actually worth paying for, read on. We'll cover what maintenance actually is, real monthly costs, what a care plan should include and what happens when you skip it.

What website maintenance actually is

Website maintenance is the regular work that keeps your site secure, up to date and working properly. Most of it happens in the background. When it's done well, you never notice it.

A typical maintenance routine covers six things:

  1. Software updates. Your content management system (CMS), plugins and themes all release updates. Many of them fix security holes.
  2. Security monitoring. Regular scans for malware and suspicious changes to your site's files.
  3. Backups. Daily or weekly copies of your site, so it can be restored quickly if something breaks.
  4. Uptime monitoring. Automatic checks that alert someone the moment your site goes down.
  5. Small content updates. New opening hours, a staff change, an updated price list.
  6. Performance checks. Making sure pages still load quickly as your site grows.

The amount of work depends on the platform. A WordPress site with lots of plugins needs more hands-on care than a site built on a hosted platform like Webflow, where the platform handles core updates and hosting.

Real website maintenance costs in Australia (2026)

So what does website maintenance cost in Australia? Here are typical monthly prices, grouped by the kind of site you have.

Ranges based on published 2026 pricing from Australian maintenance providers and our own experience.
Plan typeMonthly cost (AUD, ex GST)Best for
Entry care plan$79–$98Small WordPress site, basic care only
Basic care$90–$180Brochure website that rarely changes
Standard business$180–$380A website that brings in work
Advanced or e-commerce$380–$980+Sites that take payments or bookings

Why such a big spread? It comes down to risk. If a brochure site goes down for an hour, you might miss a phone call. If an online store goes down for an hour, you lose sales. Sites that handle payments and customer data need closer monitoring, more frequent backups and faster response times.

WordPress maintenance cost also tends to sit higher than for hosted platforms, because there are more moving parts to update and test.

What's included in a website care plan

A website care plan is a monthly package that bundles maintenance tasks together for a fixed fee. Before you sign up for one, check it includes these basics:

  • Core, theme and plugin updates (for WordPress sites)
  • A backup before every update, so changes can be rolled back
  • Malware and file-integrity scans
  • Uptime monitoring with alerts
  • A monthly report showing what was done
  • A set number of hours for minor content edits

That last one varies the most. Some plans include 30 minutes of edits a month. Others include several hours. If you update your site often, a plan with more edit time can work out cheaper than paying by the hour. Ad-hoc content updates usually cost $120–$176 an hour.

Also ask what's not included. Bigger changes, like new pages, new features or a redesign, usually sit outside a care plan and are quoted separately.

Maintenance vs redesign: what's the difference?

These two often get mixed up, but they do different jobs.

MaintenanceRedesign
What it doesKeeps the site running, secure and up to dateChanges how the site looks and works
How oftenEvery monthEvery 3–5 years
Typical cost$90–$380/month for most small businesses$5,000–$15,000 for a full redesign
Do you need it?Yes, alwaysWhen the site no longer fits your business

Think of maintenance as servicing your car and a redesign as buying a new one. Regular servicing doesn't stop you needing a new car one day. But it does mean the one you have runs well until then, and it often stretches the time before you need to replace it.

What happens if you skip maintenance?

Skipping maintenance saves money for a month or two. After that, the costs start to show up, usually all at once.

  • Security holes. Out-of-date plugins are one of the most common ways websites get hacked. A hacked site can be flagged by Google and blocked in browsers.
  • Broken features. An update to one part of the site can quietly break another. Contact forms are a common casualty, and you might not notice until enquiries dry up.
  • Slow pages. Sites slow down as content, images and plugins pile up. Slow sites lose visitors and rank lower.
  • Lost rankings. Broken pages, slow load times and security warnings all hurt how your site appears in Google.
  • Bigger repair bills. Fixing a hacked or broken site in an emergency almost always costs more than a year of regular care.

The worst part is timing. Problems tend to surface when you're busiest, and when your website matters most.

FAQ

How much does website maintenance cost per year?

For most Australian small businesses, website maintenance costs around $1,200–$3,000 a year. A simple brochure site sits at the lower end. Sites that take bookings or payments cost more, often well over $3,000 a year, because they need closer monitoring and faster support.

Can I maintain my website myself?

Yes, if you have the time and know what you're doing. You'll need to run updates, take backups, watch for security issues and fix anything that breaks. Many owners start doing it themselves, then hand it over once they realise how much time it takes.

Is maintenance included in the build price?

Usually not, beyond a short fix window after launch. Most studios include a few weeks of free bug fixes, then offer ongoing maintenance as an optional monthly plan. Check your quote so you know exactly when the fix window ends.

How is WordPress maintenance cost different?

WordPress sites often cost more to maintain because the core software, theme and every plugin need regular updates and testing. Hosted platforms handle more of that for you, so there's usually less hands-on work each month.
